Didn't Bother Me Until Now...

As a newspaper journalist back in the day, I had to write a lot of obituaries. We all did it. Not bad when you didn't know the deceased.

Since then I have written obits for many of my family members...and it hurt. But I wanted it to be correct, as it was likely the last legacy they would receive. I was trained by the best - my colleague - the late Gloria Shafer of the Battle Creek Enquirer. You did not screw up obits and she taught me how to do it right.

This particular one, though, hurt like hell -- it was my mom's recent obituary - after about 15 years, Alzheimer's took her down. Gloria - you'll be happy to know I got it all right. No way would I screw up this one - or any obit for that matter.

Rest in peace, Mom. Love you forever.

So What Do You Think of the White House News Coverage?

I am curious about how you all feel the news media is covering the White House and Donald Trump. What are your thoughts -- are they unfair? Not aggressive enough? Fair and impartial? When talking about "news media" I mean not only nightly news broadcasts, but news talk shows, coverage of the government (i.e. impeachment hearings) newspapers, magazines, and anything/one else publicizing the national government.

What are your thoughts on the news media today? I'm interested in hearing from you...

Old News - The Demise of the Sunday Newspaper

It was a tradition, not only in my parents' home, but with my husband and I as well -- read the Sunday newspaper.

Growing up it was my hometown paper in Oshkosh,Wisconsin, but also (what was then called) the Milwaukee Journal. We kids would fight over who got the comics section first, much to the chagrin of our parents.

I liked newspaper journalism so much I went into it as a profession upon graduating from college in 1982. Did that for about 15 years and I still freelance. I love news.

So what am I getting at here?

My husband and I decided not to buy the local/state Sunday paper anymore. We do subscribe to a national newspaper we get Monday-Saturday if our mail carrier decides to show up (we live in the country), but there is no Sunday edition.

Our state and local Sunday papers regurgitate what they've published all week, with few new locally written articles. Sports stories are new, obituaries are new....not a whole lot else.

Why? That's easy to answer - most news is on your computer or your phone. I understand that. Maybe I am naive, but I don't think that means newspapers have to skimp on news.

What are your thoughts on this? I'd love to hear them.

Never thought I would say this...

Though I was a youngster when Richard Nixon was president, I didn't like him and was glad when he resigned. Never did I think I'd see the day when I'd take him back...except now. Apparently, others agree.

Trump Comparison to Nixon is Not Fair

I just don't understand why Trump's GOP colleagues are not taking a strong stand against him and what he is doing to our country. Is it just the way things are now? What will it take to get him out of there? I am no fan of the current vice president, but he would be less scary than his boss.

And gag they would...

I saw a story today in The New York Times and it made me think about our founding fathers and what they stood for. Yes, unfortunately they are rolling in their graves right now....

Now This Is The News Media I Remember...

Way To Go Media! - You're Back At It!!

Watching the news last night, there was a report on Trump's alleged deal with Mexico regarding immigration. And he was holding a piece of paper up as the was talking about it, indicating that he was holding the agreement. Journalists took the above image and blew it up to read what was on the paper. Gotta love modern technology.

Well done! Now they couldn't see everything, but what they could, they told us about. It will be interesting to see the White House reaction to this one. Keep it up, journalists! Channel your inner Woodward and Bernstein! You can do this!

REALLY??????

So take a look at this capture from the NBC Today Show website and tell me what is wrong with the photo caption.

What it says is Senator Dole saluted President Bush lied in his casket. How about "as the President lay in state?" He didn't lie...he did pass away.

Sad....
