Degrees don't guarantee employment...

I saw an article in USA Today this week regarding students graduating from college now. From what prospective employers are saying, recent college graduates are not ready for the workforce. Despite having a degree, they do not have the skill set, social or communications skills or street savvy to work in today's workforce.

Unfortunately, I believe this is true. I'm not saying these young people aren't smart -- they are. But there are two things factoring in here. Colleges - not all of them, but a good deal of them -- are still living in the "ivory tower." I truly believe they don't know what it's like in the real world. How do I know this? I used to work for one.

Students are spending a great deal of money for degrees that may not do them any good. And the price for those degrees goes up every year -- faster than inflation. Here's a link to a listing of 33 unusual college degrees at universities today - many of them are in the United States while others are overseas. Check it out, and read the comments that go with it -- they list more of these degrees at other institutions.

Another reason has nothing to do with a degree, but has everything to do with communication. Social media and smart phones are guilty of promoting the lack of communication among young people -- and adults. Communication is more than a Facebook post or a 140 character tweet. I heard a woman who heads a church youth group say she needed to learn how to use Twitter because that is how young people communication now.

Sad.

Is this the direction communication is heading -- I hope not.
